1968 Excavation BRISTOL CASTLE (SITE B)

Information from Bristol UAD; UAD No: 448. Excavation in the Tower
Street/Lower Castle Street area following landscaping works. A medieval
wall was interpreted as the east curtain of the castle. Accession no:

1969 Excavation BRISTOL CASTLE (SITE C)

Information from Bristol UAD; UAD No: 3287. Excavation between the line of
the former Tower Street and Lower Castle Street on the expected line of the
east curtain wall of the castle revealed the castle ditch, recut in the
Civil War period.

Observation of trenching on Castle Green revealed the west wall of a 17th
century building with three floor levels.

1970 Watching Brief CASTLE GREEN

Information from Bristol UAD; UAD No: 20. Monitoring of pipe and cable
laying in the north-west corner of the Keep revealed an early 18th century
pit containing Delft, slip- and stonewares, cut into a robber trench of the
north-west Keep tower. Accession no: 282/1970.

1971 Watching Brief BRISTOL CASTLE

Watching brief on service trench which cut the original motte ditch. The
castle ditch was traced on the west from the south-west gate to Newgate.
It was found to be over 10m deep and up to 25m wide. It cut the backfilled
motte ditch and was in turn infilled in the 17th century.

1971 Watching Brief BRISTOL CASTLE (SITE H)

Watching brief on service trench located the north-west corner of the Keep,
built into a truncated cut-off ditch originally linking the motte to the
River Frome in Newgate Street. Another wall to the north had a gate arch
and may have formed part of a precinct around the Keep.

wall (a possible ward division) was recorded below 17th century levels

1971 Watching Brief BRISTOL CASTLE (MOTTE DITCH)

Information from Bristol UAD; UAD No: 136. Monitoring of service trenching
across the original motte ditch allowed its dimensions to be accurately
plotted as 83m north-south by 79m east-west externally; it was slightly
oval in shape.

1992- 1993 Watching Brief CASTLE PARK/PETER STREET

Excavation and monitoring during re-landscaping work. Most of the remnants encountered seemed attributable to Henry III's rebuilding of the Castle during the 1220's. Reinterred human bones were encountered which were subsequently reburied. The remains of a well, originally beyond the area of the Castle, may be those of St Edith's Well, dating from the C14th and in use until the C19th. Accession no: 16/1992
