More information : (TL 38190096) Stony Bridge (NR) (1)
The Bridge, about 280 yards NNE of Waltham Holy Cross church (TL 30 SE 125), is probably of the 14th century. The bridge retains three chamfered ribs forming three-centred arches, there are traces of three other ribs now destroyed. (2)
Stony Bridge is under the care of the MOW and has been recently restored. Altough scheduled as 'Stoney Bridge' the MOW plaque calls it 'Harolds bridge' which follows local nomenclature. No reference to it other than 'Harold's Bridge' has been found. (3)
A slightly raised causeway runs across Veresmead (TL 30 SE 127) from the medieval Stony Bridge over the Cornmill stream to the remains of the bridge which spanned the lower mill stream. This causeway connected the Grange yard (TL 30 SE 126) with Waltham Abbey. (4)
This was originally recorded as part of TL 30 SE 8 (see OS card for plan). (5)
The bridge leading to Waltham Abbey Gatehouse was built in the 14th century. See source for further details. (6) |
