MONUMENT NO. 974863

DESCRIPTION + /

An 11th century Anglo-Saxon and Norman occupation site. Excavations by JH Hope between 1978-81 established the presence of a pre-Norman occupation site at Cressing Temple. Evidence was found for a timber hall or house, and several inhumation burials predating the founding of the Preceptory of the Knights Templars in 1136. The inhumations are likely to be Late Saxon or Norman.
