Summary : An 11th century Anglo-Saxon and Norman occupation site. Excavations by JH Hope between 1978-81 established the presence of a pre-Norman occupation site at Cressing Temple. Evidence was found for a timber hall or house, and several inhumation burials pre-dating the founding of the Preceptory of the Knights Templars in 1136. The inhumations are likely to be Late Saxon or Norman. |
More information : (TL 7995 1870) Excavations by JH Hope between 1978-81 established the presence of a pre-Norman occupation site at Cressing Temple. Evidence was found for a timber hall and several inhumation burials predating the founding of the Preceptory of the Knights Templars in 1136. (1)
The excavations revealed that the east wall of Knights Templars' chapel was constructed above pre-existing inhumation burials. (2)
The chapel was constructed over an earlier cemetery, probably late Saxon or Saxo-Norman. (3)
