More information : TL 2188 2798 (FCE) post-Dissolution house and garden, previously recorded under NMR no. TL 22 NW 15. At the Dissolution Wymondley Priory passed to James Nedeham Clerk of the Kings Works; he pulled down some of the priory buildings to create a country house. Parts of the former priory were incorporated into the house (principally a section of the nave) and garden walls; these are now listed at grade I and grade II respectively. (1a) The descendants of James Nedeham Clerk subsequently enlarged this house by building a large 17th-century wing at the E end of the present farmhouse, retaining the old house as a service wing. Associated with this remodelling were gardens, also to the E. After the demolition of this house, by the end of the 18th-century, the service wing was retained as a farmhouse (see separate record). The moat which surrounds the site of the former house (see NMR no. TL 22 NW 16) is post-Dissolution in form but may have earlier origins.
The above description is summarised from a detailed level 3 RCHME 1:1000 scale survey of Wymondley Priory conducted in August 1990. The results of the survey are held in the NMR. (1)
