Tower 3a

Hob Uid: 9688
Location :
Cumbria
Allerdale
Bowness
Grid Ref : NY1812060420
Summary : The site of Roman tower 3A, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall along the Cumbrian coast.
More information : (Centred at NY 1814 6040) Roman Tower 3A. A mound in the field 1/4 mile west of Pasture House, much destroyed by ploughing. Only a small patch of wall remaining, but Upchurch and Samian sherds found, and quantities of dressed freestone which was used to build an outhouse gable at Pasture House. There was no indication of the shape of the tower. (1)

(NY 1813 6040 "A" sited from plan) Site of tower clearly marked by masonry debris, facing stones deposited on the edge of the field. (2)

(NY 1815 6041 "B") (3)

(NY 1818 6041 "C") Exact position of Roman signal tower, excavated and destroyed 1880. (4)

(NY 1810 6039 "D") Tower (Approximate co-ordinates of large sized symbol). (5)

(NY 1813 6039 "E") Tower 3A. (6)

The field concerned is under crop, with no surface indication of antiquity. (7)

There is no indication from literary or ground sources as to which is the correct site. Siting A, D, and E are approximate only, due to the scale of plan, and large size of symbol used. (8)

Previous authorities have provided different positions for tower 3a along a gentle N-facing slope of a low gravel ridge, within a managed pasture field. Nothing can be seen now, and the precise position is unknown. The distance between milefortlet 3 and tower 3b in a straight line is 988m or exactly two-thirds of a Roman mile; if tower 3a is precisely equidistant between them and on the same line then its position would be at NY 1812 6042. (9)

There was no sign of the remains of the tower on available air photographs. (10)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (11)
