More information : (SP 29603096) King Stone (NR) (1)
A standing stone known as King Stone, 8ft high and 5ft wide. (2)
King Stone - a monolith - no change (3)
The King Stone, a prehistoric monolith 2.4m high and 1.5m wide, with a notch in its east side due to an 18th and 19th century custom of chipping pieces off. The date of the stone is unknown and its purpose disputed. It was once thought to be connected with a nearby mound (SP 23 SE 9) as part of a chambered tomb and was later thought to be an out lier to the stone circle, but excavations on the mound, in 1982 revealed a cairn within 5m of the King Stone with late Neolithic or Bronze Age cremations which the stone, it is suggested, may have been erected to mark. The King Stone is Listed as scheduled ancient monument 7 for Warwickshire. (11)
Excavations carried out in 1983 showed the presence of a probable round cairn and associated cremations (SP 23 SE 9). It is possible the stone was used as a marked or memorial. However further excavations are required to aid interpretation. (12)
Revised scheduling. (13)
The Rollright Trust website has more details on the site. (14)
