More information : In January 1963 substantial remains of turfwork of Milefort 12 was found at NY 1042 5255. The top of the rampart could not positively be identified, but it is estimated to be at least 6ft high. A large corroded nail and a pot-rim dated AD 270-340 was found. (1)
Excavated August 1967, but little remains other than the previously noted turfwork were found. (2)
Milefortlet 12 was located to NY 1041 5257 from the configuration of quarrying and excavation pits shown on Bellhouse's plan (see authority 2), and this position was subsequently verified on the ground by Bellhouse (3a). The site is damaged by wind erosion and quarrying, and the vegetation is impenetrable. No remains of the milefortlet can be seen. (3)
