Summary : The site of tower 12A at Silloth Golf Course, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall on the Cumbrian coast. The tower was originally of sandstone construction and was excavated during the 1960s by Bellhouse. The Tower is not positively identified on air photography but may potentially be covered by 1948 vertical photography. |
More information : Site of Tower 12a found in Jan 1963 at NY 1027 5210, survives as a hillock in the line of ancient sand-hills covered with the canal gravel and red sandstone chips. (1)
Excavated Aug/Sept 1966. It was found to have been originally 20' square, with later repairs reducing the size to 20' x 15'. The pottery finds made are dated no later than AD 140. (2)
The site of tower 12a is now represented by the remains of Bellhouse's excavation trench on top of a slight mound on Bitterlees Golf course at NY 1026 5213. The position was verified by Bellhouse on the ground (3a). The view to the South is somewhat obscured by high sand dunes. (3)
