Summary : A Roman inscribed tombstone was found on Ludgate Hill in 1669.

Large tombstone 83 1/2 inches by 31 1/2 inches. Inscription above, below figure of a soldier. Found 1669 when Wren rebuilt St Martin's Church Ludgate Hill. Now in the Ashmolean Museum. The inscription reads:

"D(is) M(anilus) Vivio Marciano leg(ioni) ii. Aug(ustae), Ianuaria Martins coiunx pientissima posuit remoriam".

("In memory of Vivius Marcianus of the Second Augustan Legion; Januaria Martina, his most devoted wife, set up this monument". (1)
