Summary : A Roman inscribed tombstone of probable late 1st century date was found in Church Lane, Whitechapel in 1776.
More information : (TQ 340815. Roman tombstone sited from Auth 1, OS 25" 1916 and OS 10000 1979).

An inscribed Roman tombstone was found in CHurch Lane, Whitechapel, near Rosemary Lane, in 1776. Now lost. It reads:

"D(is) M(anibus), Iul(ius) Valens, mil(es) leg(ionis) XX V(aleriae) V(istris), an(norum) XL, h(ic) s(ites) e(st); c(uram) a(gente) Flavio Attio her(ede)".

("In memory of Julius Valens, private in the Twentieth Valerian Victorius Legion, aged 40, he lies here; set up by his heir Flavis Attius"). Probably late C1. (1)
