An inscribed Roman tombstone was found in CHurch Lane, Whitechapel, near Rosemary Lane, in 1776. Now lost. It reads:
"D(is) M(anibus), Iul(ius) Valens, mil(es) leg(ionis) XX V(aleriae) V(istris), an(norum) XL, h(ic) s(ites) e(st); c(uram) a(gente) Flavio Attio her(ede)".
("In memory of Julius Valens, private in the Twentieth Valerian Victorius Legion, aged 40, he lies here; set up by his heir Flavis Attius"). Probably late C1. (1) |
