More information : SK 477 297 Cambridge aerial photographs show what Whimster describes as four or five squares 12 - 19 metres across. He considers them to be possible Iron Age Square barrows, but also notes that at least one of them seems to have an entrance unlike other IA examples. (1)
Four later prehistoric/ Roman rectilinear ditched enclosures and field boundaries are visible as cropmarks on air photographs, centred at SK 4778 2960. The size of the enclosures varies. The smallest in size has maximum internal dimensions measuring 10m by 10m; the largest has maximum internal dimensions measuring 17m by 13m. Their variable size and form suggests they are not Iron Age square barrows as suggested by authority 1. Rather they are part of a later prehistoric/Roman field system located to the north-west (UID 1517713), north-east (UID 1517724) and south-east (UID 1517747). (2-3) |
