Earthwork remains of a medieval moated site and possible manor house. A system of banks and ditches defend a peninsula in Crummock Water on the landward side. Also, supposed site of a pele tower further to the west.

[Area: NY 15082021] Possible foundations of a Pele Tower on the lake side at the N. end of Crummock Water, where a peninsula juts into the lake, and apparently remains of a moat. (2-3)

NY 149201 to NY 149202 Surveyed at 1:2500.
The remains of an embanked dyke (now marshy and in poor condition) which partly cuts the neck of a natural promontory. There are no certain traces of a Pele-tower on this promontory (ie. the lake side) though some foundations of a square building at NY 14982029 adjacent to the ruins of a modern farm building could be its remains. (4)

Earthwork remains of a Medieval moated manor house known as Loweswater Pele, thought to be the home of Ranulphe de Lindessaye and his wife who were connected with Loweswater during the mid-12th century. The site consists of a peninsula defended on the landward side by a system of bank and ditches; the ditches are predominately waterlogged. The manor house is thought to have been located on the lake side where there are the rectangular foundations of a hollow, 26m by 12m, which have been interpreted as the cellar of a building. The Ordnance Survey maps, however, locate a 'peel' some 120m further west on the opposite side of a hillock where a ruined farmhouse is considered the successor to earlier structures. (5)
