More information : This barrow was excavated by W.F Grimes in 1959, it is situated about 15 metres west of Wilsford 38 (SU 14 SW 461) at SU 10774024. It is a small barrow superfically about 30ft across and 1ft high, though the ditch revealed by excavation enclosed an area only 19-20ft in diameter. It contained a burial pit slightly north of centre. It was about 20 inches across and 10 inches deep, filled with chalk and rubble; nothing remained of any cremation. (1)
The position of this barrow could not be identified. (2)
An indistinct roughly circular feature about 7m in diameter, possibly representing the remains of a plough levelled barrow mound, is visible as a cropmark at this location on aerial photographs. The possible barrow has been mapped by EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (5) |
