More information : `M' - SU 11844411; Durrington 14, a saucer barrow with an overall diameter of about 112ft. (1) Excavations by Colt Hoare (Barrow 73) found traces of a cremation and a possible secondary inhumation with four lignite beads found near the neck (DM 311-2). (2-3)
Durrington 14, a saucer barrow, 32m in diameter with a 1.1m high mound, a 0.5m deep ditch and a 0.3m high outer bank. Published survey (25") revised. (4)

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (7-9)
The Bronze Age round barrow referred to above (1-9) survives as earthworks centred at SU 1184 4412. It measures a maximum overall diameter of nearly 34m and comprises a central mound which sits on a circular platform that is surrounded by a concentric ring ditch and outer bank. The mound stands circa 0.5m high: it's top measures 6.5m and its base 11m in diameter. The platform is 14m in diameter and a berm separates the bottom of the mound from the edge of the ditch. The ring ditch measures 5m wide and is just circa 0.1m deep, and the outer bank measures 4m wide and stands 0.2m high. The round barrow was surveyed at a scale of 1:1,000 by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. (10-11) |
