More information : `L' - SU 11784411. Durrington 13, a saucer barrow with an overall diameter of 112ft. (1) Excavations by Colt Hoare (Barrow 71) located a possible primary cremation in an urn, a secondary cremation in an urn, and higher in the barrow, the skeleton of a child. (2)
Durrington 13, a saucer barrow 32m in diameter with a 1m high mound, a 0.7m deep ditch and an outer bank 0.4m high. Published survey (25") revised. (3)
Originally recorded as Durrington 13 by Goddard. (4)
The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (6-8)
The Bronze Age round barrow referred to above (1-8) survives as earthworks centred at SU 1178 4412. It measures 33m in overall diameter and comprises a broad topped circular mound which stands 0.8m high and is surrounded by a concentric ring ditch and an outer bank. The top of the mound measures 12m and the base is 19m in diameter. The ditch measures up to 6m wide: it is 0.5m deep on the western side and 0.7m deep on the eastern side. The outer bank measures 4m wide and stands circa 0.2m high. Several amorphous hollows on top of the mound may relate to Colt Hoare's early 19th century excavations (see source 2). The round barrow was surveyed at a scale of 1:1,000 by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. (9-10) |
