Originally recorded as Durrington 17a by Goddard. (4)
The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (6-8)
The Bronze Age round barrow referred to above (1-8) survives as earthworks centred at SU 1193 4409. The barrow comprises a central mound which is conjoined with the mound of Durrington 17, a round barrow immediately to its north-west (Monument Number 937778). There is a slight saddle between their two tops. The round barrow measures 16m in diameter: the top of its mound measures 3m and its base is 9m in diameter. It stands circa 0.5m high, slightly higher than Durrington 17 because of the hill-slope. Both barrows are almost surrounded by a single shallow ditch, circa 6m wide and just 0.1m deep, which is not clearly visible west of the mounds although the ditch's northern side appears to continue westwards to join the ditch around Durrington 16 (Monument Number 937768). The round barrow was surveyed at 1:1,000scale by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. (9-10) |
