Durrington 17a (Goddard)

Hob Uid: 937980
Location :
Wiltshire
Durrington
Grid Ref : SU1193044080
Summary : A Bronze Age round barrow survives as earthworks and forms part of the Durrington Down round barrow cemetery (Monument Number 219633). The barrow comprises a central mound which is conjoined with the mound of Durrington 17, a round barrow immediately to its north-west (Monument Number 937778). There is a slight saddle between their two tops. The round barrow measures 16m in diameter: the top of the mound is 3m and the base is 9m in diameter. It stands slightly higher than Durrington 17 because of the hill-slope. Both barrows are almost surrounded by a single shallow ditch, circa 6m wide and just 0.1m deep, which is not clearly visible south-west of the mounds although the ditch's northern side appears to continue westwards to join the ditch around Durrington 16 (Monument Number 937768). Colt Hoare noted that the barrow had been opened previously (Barrow 77). The barrow is listed by Goddard and as a bowl barrow by Grinsell (both as Durrington 17a). The round barrow was surveyed at 1:1,000scale by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project.
More information : `E' - SU 11934408; Durrington 17a a bowl barrow 24ft in diameter and 1.5m high, it adjoins Durrington 17 (SU 14 SW 408) (1). Investigations by Colt Hoare (Barrow 77) found that the barrow had been opened previously, no records of any finds (2)

Durrington 17a a confluent barrow with Durrington 17 (SU 14 SW 408) and is 9.0m in diameter and 0.8m high. Published survey (25") revised. (3)

Originally recorded as Durrington 17a by Goddard. (4)

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (6-8)

The Bronze Age round barrow referred to above (1-8) survives as earthworks centred at SU 1193 4409. The barrow comprises a central mound which is conjoined with the mound of Durrington 17, a round barrow immediately to its north-west (Monument Number 937778).
