Summary : A Bronze Age round barrow survives as earthworks and forms part of the Durrington Down round barrow cemetery (Monument Number 219633). The barrow comprises a central mound which is conjoined with the mound of Durrington 17a, a round barrow immediately to its south-east (Monument Number 937980). There is a slight saddle between their two tops. The round barrow measures 18m in diameter: the mound measures 4.5m in diameter at its top and 12m across its base. It stands 0.8m high to the south, but only 0.3m high upslope to the north-east. Both barrows are almost surrounded by a single shallow ditch circa 5m wide and just 0.1m deep, which is not clearly visible south-west of the mounds, although it's northern side appears to continue westwards to join the ditch around Durrington 16 (Monument Number 937768). Colt Hoare noted that the barrow had been opened previously (Barrow 76). The barrow is listed by Goddard and as a bowl barrow by Grinsell (both as Durrington 17). The round barrow was surveyed at 1:1,000scale by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. |
