Durrington 12 (Goddard)

Hob Uid: 937766
Location :
Wiltshire
Durrington
Grid Ref : SU1176044100
Summary : A Bronze Age bowl barrow survives as earthworks and forms part of the Durrington Down round barrow cemetery (Monument Number 219633). It measures 22m in overall diameter and comprises a circular mound, circa 0.7m high, surrounded by a ring ditch circa 0.3m deep, with a section of outer bank to the south-west. The top of the mound measures circa 9m and the base measures 14m in diameter. The mound's top is concave, perhaps from Colt Hoare's excavations (Barrow 70) which uncovered an interment of bones in an irregular cist. The barrow was listed by Goddard and as a bowl barrow by Grinsell (both as Durrington 12). A 20th century military warning star is located west of the mound. The round barrow was surveyed at 1:1,000scale by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project.
More information : `B' - SU 11764410; Durrington 12, a bowl barrow 45ft in diameter and 2ft high (1). Excavations by Colt Hoare (Barrow 70) located a primary cremation (2).

Durrington 12, a ditched bowl barrow 1.1m high with a 0.3m deep ditch to the north. Published survey (25") revised. (3)

Originally recorded as Durrington 12 by Goddard. (4)

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (6-8)

The Bronze Age bowl barrow referred to above (1-8) survives as earthworks centred at SU 1176 4412. It measures 22m in overall diameter and comprises a circular mound, circa 0.7m high, surrounded by a ring ditch circa 3m wide and 0.3m deep, with a section of outer bank, 3m wide, to the south-west. The top of the mound measures circa 9m and the base measures 14m in diameter. The mound's top is concave, perhaps from Colt Hoare's excavations (see source 2). A 20th century military warning star is located to the west of the barrow mound, at SU 1175 4411. The round barrow was surveyed at 1:1,000scale by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. (9-10)
