Westernmost Barrow Of 3 To The East Of New Kings Barrow

Summary : Westernmost of 3 Bronze Age round barrows and part of a round barrow cemetery of 6 barrows in all. Located east of the New King Barrows, the Avenue passes through the cemetery splitting it in 2 halves and these 3 barrows appear in the western part. All 3 barrows have been levelled by cultivation and are difficult to identify on the ground, visible only as a cropmark. Scheduled.

SU 1374 4224: Amesbury 102. A levelled bowl barrow 81 feet in diameter. (2)

This site cannot be identified on the ground. The field was recently seeded with winter wheat and the young shoots may obliterate any soil marks. (3)

The barrow is defined by a single ditch 30m in diameter, although the north eastern part is obscured by trees. It has been mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (5)
