More information : `A'- SU 13454203: Amesbury 26, a bowl barrow 105ft in diameter, 9ft high. (1)
Amesbury 26; a bowl barow 1.9m high and about 20m in diameter. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (2)
Originally recorded as Amesbury 26 by Goddard. (3)
Part of the barrow ditch was observed during the excavation of a water pipeline. It was found to be badly disturbed by tree root activity but appeared to be of two phases, a flat-bottomed ditch and a ditch with more sloping sides. No finds were recovered. (4)
The barrow falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. It has been included on the survey maps, but is covered by trees, and no further information could be added from aerial photographic evidence. (6)
The round barrow was recorded in April 2011 using handheld GPS (with an accuracy of circa 1m) as part of English Heritage's Stonehenge WHS Landscape project - Level 1 survey. A break in slope was observed around the mound at 5m from its approximate centre [SU 13449 42033]. The upper mound is 0.6m high and the break is berm-like in places. There are hints of another break in slope at a lower level, together with animal and tree disturbance. (7) |
