More information : TA 1186 0135. Medieval borough. First mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as `Castre'(1a), and in the Danelaw Charters (1b). Name derives from the Old English `caester' or `ceaster' meaning Roman camp or fort. (1) Between 1197-8 it was recorded in the Pipe Rolls that a rent of 20 marks had come from the borough in Pipe Roll. Sums `de incremento fori' had been paid since 1176-7. (2-2a)
