Summary : An excavation was undertaken by L Helliwell and J Jackson for the Southend Historical Society to determine the history of the artificial mound on which the house stands. The site is moated. A major retaining wall was found to hold the raised mound on the north-east side. The south gatehouse was discovered, also some evidence of a north gatehouse or bridge abutment; bridge timbers lie beneath the later earth causeway. The garderobe was also found, and its date of abandonment is suggested as circa 1500. |
