Summary : Two confluent bowl barrows, investigations by Thomas located stake and post holes beneath the mound which he interpreted as an earlier occupation site. These features may below to an earlier pre-mound phase of the barrow. |
More information : SU 21715209: Collingbourne Kingston 23, two confluent bowl barrows, 21 x 12 paces, 2ft high. Depicited on Colt Hoares map of `Chidbuy Camp' (1). Excavated by Thomas in 1957 (Barrow 10, site XII and Barrow 11, site XIII). No barrow ditches were recorded. A series of stake and post holes were found beneath the barrow together with finds which includes flint implements and beaker and grooved ware pottery. These features were interpreted by Thomas as an earlier occupation site. It is likely that these features represented an earlier pre-mound phase of the barrow. (2-3)
