Summary : A bowl barrow excavated by Colt Hoare who located a primary and secondary cremation, and by Thomas who located structures beneath the mound which were interpreted as an earlier occupation site. These may be an earlier phase of the barrow. |
More information : SU 21705211: Collingbourne Kingston 10a, a bowl barrow 15 paces in diameter, 1.5ft high (1). Excavated by Colt Hoare (RCH 9) who located an empty cist and a secondary cremation with urn fragments found nearby. (2). This barrow (Barrow 7) was one of nine excavated by Thomas in 1957 and was found to have no barrow ditch. Features including stake and post holes, together with flint implements and pottery including beaker and grooved ware were recorded benaeth the barrow. Thomas interpreted these as as earlier occupation site. They are more likely to correspond to a pre-mound phase of the barrow. (3)
