More information : Barrow 5 (1). SU 21675210: Collingbourne Kingston 25, a bowl barrow 12 paces in diameter, 3ft high. (2) Excavated by Colt Hoare (RCH barrow 8) who located a primary cremation. (3)
This barrow was excavated by Thomas in 1957 (Site XVII). There was a slight depression within the top with suggested it had previously been investigated by Colt Hoare, but there were no indications during the modern excavations. The ditch was 3ft deep and c. 5ft wide. Post holes were found within the interior which Thomas interpreted as being the remains of a wooden structure on which the corpse was placed prior to cremation. A burial pit was located within the centre of this in which Thomas claims had been deliberately broken and the cremation placed on the top. Three pits were dug into the mound on the west side, one contained fragments of cremated bone, another with charcoal, and the third with part of a collared urn. (4)
