Chantry Chapel Of St John The Baptist

Summary : The chantry chapel of St John the Evangelist was built by Bishop Salmon in 1316. The chapel and the college for priests (TG 20 NW 363) were originally separate buildings, but they were joined together by Bishop Lyhart (1446-72). Since 1551 the chapel has been used by King Edward VI Grammar School. The present appearance is the result of work carried out 1937-40 by Mr Sundells. It is constructed from stone with a plain tiled roof and comprises four bays above a four bay twin-aisled undercroft.

The chantry chapel of St John the Evangelist was built by Bishop Salmon in 1316. Since 1551 the chapel has been used by King Edward VI Grammer School. Restoration place has taken place since the 16th century, the present appearance is the result of work carried out 1937-40 by Mr Sundells.(1)
