More information : Barrow 26, King Barrow. (1) SU 22065196: Collingbourne Ducis 5, a bell barrow, mound 84ft in diameter x 13ft high, berm 18ft wide, ditch 18ft wide, 2ft deep. On the north side of the berm is a small mound, measuring 18ft in diameter and 2.5ft high, now damaged by tanks. (2) Both investigated by Colt Hoare (RCH 25, smaller mound 57) but no burials located. (3)
This barrow and the smaller mound were excavated by Thomas (Site XXII) in 1957. The relationship between the two mounds could not be determined due to damage caused by a tank track. A crouched inhumation, with three amber beads and a perforated cockle shell was located within the smaller mound. (4)
The dimensions given for the barrow are substantially correct. OS 1:2500 survey revised. (5)
Originally recorded as Collingbourne Ducis 5 by Goddard. (6) |
