More information : Barrow 25 (1). SU 22055202: Collingbourne Ducis 4, a twin bell barrow. The NNW mound measured 42ft in diameter and 5ft high, with an over diameter diameter of 192ft. The SSE mound measured 87ft in diameter with an overall diameter of 159ft (2). Both barrows were investigated by Colt Hoare (RCH 24) who located a possible primary mound in the NNW mound. The SSE mound contained a cremation situated within a tree-trunk chest accompanied by a dagger, parts of a small cup, and a pin with ring attachments. (3)
This barrow was excavated by Thomas (site XIX). He found that the larger mound had been constructed first, with both mounds having a turf core retained by a ring of stakes, and the surrounding ditch had been dug last. (4) Iron Age pottery had been recovered from the mound during Thomas's excavations. (7)
The dimensions given for the barrow are substantially correct. OS 1:2500 survey revised. (5)
Originally recorded as Collingbourne Ducis 4 by Goddard. (6)
