More information : Barrow 24 (1). SU 22045207: Collingbourne Ducis 3a, a bowl barrow 15 paces in diameter, 0.5ft high. (2) Excavated by Colt Hoare (RCH barrow 23) but located no features. (3)
Excavated by Thomas in 1953 (Site XV). He located a central ring of post holes which enclosed three pits, one of which contained a cremation. Finds including a shale bead, a bone awl, `a small bone copy of a hollow-based arrowhead', and pottery were recovered from this phase of the mound. Four inhumations, possibly Roman, were recovered from the mound. (4)
The dimensions given for this barrow are substantially correct. OS 1:2500 survey revised. (5)
This barrow was originally recorded as Collingbourne Ducis 3a by Goddard. (6)
Thomas's interim report (4) states that his barrow XV is Goddard's Collingbourne Ducis 3a, however the SMR record states that this is Thomas's barrow V, a saucer barrow. This information was obtained from Thomas's manuscript report. Thus in Thomas's interim report, he equates his barrow XV with Goddard's Collingbourne Ducis 3a, and his barrow V with Goddard's Collingbourne Ducis 3, whereas the SMR, apparently on the basis of information from Thomas, has reversed this relationship.
