More information : Barrow 23. (1) SU 22025208: Collingbourne Ducis 3, a bowl barrow 22 paces in diameter, 2.5 ft high (2). Excavated by Colt Hoare (RCH barrow 22) but nothing was located. (3)
Thomas excavated the barrow in 1953 (Site V) and has interpreted it as a saucer barrow with a diameter of c. 100ft, with traces of an external bank. Three pits were found within the interior. Thomas claims this barrow never had a mound but consisted only of a ditch with an exterior bank similar to his Site II (SU 25 SW 101). (4)
The dimensions given for this barrow are substantially correct. OS 1:2500 survey revised. (5)
This barrow was originally recorded as Collingbourne Ducis 3 by Goddard. (6)
Thomas's interim report (4) states that his barrow V is Goddard's Collingbourne Ducis 3, however the SMR record states that this is Thomas's barrow XV, a bowl barrow containing a cremation. This information was obtained from Thomas's manuscript report. Thus in Thomas's interim report, he equates his barrow V with Goddard's Collingbourne Ducis 3, and his barrow XV with Goddard's Collingbourne 3a, whereas the SMR, apparently on the basis of information from Thomas, has reversed this relationship.
