More information : Barrow 4. (1) SU 21685205: Collingbourne Kingston 8, a bell barrow; mound 60ft in diameter, 8ft high. Ditch 13.5ft wide, 1ft deep. Excavated by Colt Hoare (?RCH barrow 7), who located a primary cremation within an urn. (2-3)
The barrow was excavated in 1955 by Thomas (Site III) who located the central pit which contained the cremation excavated by Colt Hoare. Secondary cremations were found on the berm within the south-west quandant, both were in urns; one accompanied with shale, amber and faience beads, the other was found with miniature vessels. Beaker pottery was found within the mound and ditch. The ditch also contained at least one sherd of Grooved ware. The southern lip of the ditch was cut by an east/west track. (4)
The dimensions given for this barrow are substantially correct. OS 1:2500 survey revised. (5)
