More information : Barrow 1 (1). SU 21555194; Collingbourne Kingston 6, a saucer barrow, mound 48ft diameter x 1ft, ditch 14ft wide x 1ft deep, outer bank 14ft wide x 1ft high. Overlapped by a modern track. It was excavated by Colt Hoare (RCH barrow 4) who located a central grave with a cremation, accompanied by a bronze awl and two incense cups. (2-3)
Excavations carried out by Thomas in 1953 (Site II) (4) located two pits, the central one contained the cremation recorded by Colt Hoare, the other to the southwest, contained the cremation of an adolescent whose skull had been trepanned. An inverted urn was found within another pit located in the southeast sector. Beaker pottery was also recovered from the mound. Thomas noted that although there was the appearance of a mound prior to excavation, no evidence was found during excavation. The barrow comprised of a ring ditch with an outer bank defining an area of burial and `ritual' pits. A greenstone axe was recovered from the ditch (SPTA 2115). (7)
The dimensions given for this barrow are substantially correct. OS 1:2500 survey revised. (5)
