Charley: a religious house which started as a Grange or Manor of the alien Benedictine Abbey of St Evroul before 1190, and was confirmed to the Benedictine Priory of Luffield in 1173-4, and then to Ware the chief English dependency of St Evroul in 1203-6. In 1220 it was described as a Hermitage, apparently independent and under no fixed rule. Later became a minor Augustinian Priory; and was dissolved and united to Ulverscroft in 1465. It may have been a house of Austin Friars before becoming a Priory. (2)
"The boundary dyke which enclosed the Priory (Charley) site survives in unusual perfection: of the wall, however, little is left in situ." (3)
The monastic house at Charley has almost completely disappeared. (4)
No evidence found to confirm the OS siting of the Priory to Charley Hall. ONB destroyed. (5)
Charley Hall is mainly 18thc with 19thc and 20thc additions (both dated). No early fabric was noticed and no information about the priory could be gained at the Hall. (6)
