More information : (SU 60438941). In NOV-1971 a G.P.O trench running across the western town defences was recorded by T Hassel an T Rowley; this trench was cut along the length of a path which ran through an existing gap. Immediately below the present ground surface was evidence of an aembankment and 2 pits. Visible in the cleared section was a buried plough soil, 2 separate banks of the town defences - the second one presumably representing the late Saxon heightening of the rampart, and extensive sitting behind the banks. Recovered from the profile were several Roman, 1 Anglo-Saxon and several Medieval sherds. (1)
The two pits observed in the section were as follows: One at SU 60485936 was filled with dark soil, was of unknown diameter and contained no artefacts, although Medieval sherds were found on the side of the trench. The outer pit was at SU 60478942, was 23.5" in diameter, filled with very dark brown soil and contained C12th and other Medieval sherds. (2) |
