More information : TA 2041 4917. `Diver' anti-aircraft emplacement. This `Diver' anti-aircraft battery took the form of a set of four heavy anti-aircraft gun emplacements and an associated camp. This was situated at North Cliff, Hornsea, and was part of an extensive network of similar sites intended to counter a specific threat, that of the V1 flying bomb. The battery would put a screen of flack up in front of the bomb and attempt to shoot it out of the sky. The site was plotted from aerial photographs dated 1945, and was later visited by the Fortress Studies Group in 1992 as part of the Holderness Survey. The survey team found nothing remaining of the site. (1-1a)
The monument is also visible as upstanding structures on air photographs examined as part of the Rapid Coastal Assessment Survey of the Yorkshire and Humber Estuary. Due to coastal erosion part of the monument no longer survives in situ. (2)
