More information : TA 2014 4668. Square pillbox.
(for a full description see TA 15 SE 45)
This pillbox of the common `square' type is positioned between Marlbrough Road and a now disused railway siding in Hornsea. It was of brick and concrete construction, and would have been intended to slow the advance of enemy forces along the course of the railway in the event of an invasion. The site was plotted from aerial photographs dated 1945 by the Fortress Studies Group, they visited the site in 1992 during the Holderness Survey and found no trace surviving. (1-1a)
The monument is also visible as an upstanding structure on air photographs examined as part of the Rapid Coastal Assessment Survey of the Yorkshire and Humber Estuary. (2)
