More information : [NY 1848 0541] Maiden Castle [T.I.] (1) An enclosure of 21' diameter, character uncertain, mentioned in 1587. (2) The 'enclosure' is a modern sheep stell, now collapsed, built from the residual material of a denuded round cairn on which it stands. The consolidated base of the latter is still a fairly obvious mound 12m diamater and 0.4m high on the east side contained by a well-defined peristalith. Surveyed at 1/10,000. (3)
Earthwork remains of a Bronze Age turf-covered circular cairn, 12m in diameter and up to 0.4m high. It is topped by the tumbled drystone wall of a circular sheepfold measuring approximately 7m in diameter. Possibly used as a beacon, scheduled. (4) |
