Summary : Site of a Second World War 'Permanent Starfish' bombing decoy and command centre at Paull Holme. Plotted from aerial photographs, the site now totally destroyed. Other parts of the site remain (see TA12SE13). |
More information : (TA 1910 2436) Bombing decoy. (TA 1905 2478) Command centre.
Situated south east of Paull Holme village this circular earthern bund was intended to emulate the nearby city of Hull which had been a major target for bombing. In conjunction with the nearby Little Humber Decoy (TA 1861 2410) which decoyed Hull docks, these provided some defence for a battered city. The bund enclosed fragments of a decoy structure which would have been set alight as bombs started to fall. The site was plotted by the Fortress Studies Group from aerial photographs, but when it was visited as part of the Holderness Survey in 1992 no trace of the site remained.
The Command Post for the decoy is situated to the north of the site. This site consists of a brick built structure with a concrete roof. This centre would have co-ordinated the setting of fires and lighting of the bombing decoy complex to produce an effective `dummy' wartime Hull. (1-1a) |
