Amesbury 83. SU 18194095. A bowl barrow 2m high. This is probably a bowl barrow though there is a slight berm on the northern side giving it the appearance of a bell barrow. The barrow is situated within a field which has been recently ploughed and harrowed. There are no soilmarks indicating a ditch but it is probable that, when under pasture, it appears to have a ditch because of ploughing close to the base of the barrow forming a slight ploughing headland. The barrow is in good condition. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
Originally recorded as Amesbury 83 by Goddard. (4)
The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (6-7) |
