More information : (`C' SU 18284102) Amesbury 78. A bowl barrow 27 paces in diameter, height 5ft, ditched: A beaker sherd found by Grinsell in 1931, and MBA sherds from barrow are in Salisbury Museum. (1)
Amesbury 78, SU 18284102. A bowl barrow 1.8m high; no traces of a ditch can be seen. The field in which the barrow is situated has recently been ploughed and harrowed. There are no soil marks indicating a ditch but it is probable that, when under pasture, it appears to have a ditch because of the practice of ploughing close up to the base of the barrow thereby forming a slight ploughing headland. In good condition. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (2)
Originally recorded as Amesbury 78 by Goddard. (3)
The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (5-6) |
