Summary : Site formerly believed to be the remains of HMS WARWICK. No wreckage has been discovered in this location. The remains of HMS WARWICK have been confirmed as lying in two parts approximately 3.5 nautical miles to the NW of this location. See records 1603123 and 1603126 for details.

Became an escort vessel May 1943. (5)

Wreck Event:

Torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U413 whilst escorting a convoy of merchant ships. (1)

Torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off Trevose Head with the loss of three officers and 64 ratings. (2)

Sunk 20-FEB-1944 by U413 off North Cornwall. (5)

20-FEB-1944: Torpedoed, while escorting a convoy 20 miles south-west of Trevose Head, by U-413. She lies in two halves on the seabed. (6)

Sunk by U-413 off North Cornwall. (5)

Attacked by U413, Kapitanleutnant Gustav Poel; the torpedo explosion set off an internal explosion within the vessel. (8)

The destroyer WARWICK was sunk by U-413 off Trevose Head. (9)

1145: Torpedoed 20 miles or 37km SW of Trevose Head, 50 29N 005 25W, by U413; sank rapidly after heavy explosion. (12)

Wreck lies in 55m depth. (4)

Part of a copper box, and a 2-gallon stoneware jar in wicker basket recovered from this wreck off North Cornwall. (Droit A/4488)(7)

On 1st May 2008 the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 (Designation of Vessels and Controlled Sites) Order 2008 (Statutory Instrument No. 950) cited the vessel known as HMS Warwick, which sank on or about 20th February 1940, as a designated vessel. The Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 (Designation of Vessels and Controlled Sites) Order 2006 (Statutory Instrument No. 2616 was revoked. (13)

The remains of HMS WARWICK have been positively identified approximately 3.5 nautical miles to the NW. See records 1603123 and 1603126 for details. No wreckage has been discovered in this location. However the record has been kept as an indicator of where the remains of HMS WARWICK were previously thought to lie. (16)
