The north walls and angle of a Roman signal tower were excavated by Messrs. Simpson & Richmond in 1937, all other remains had previously been removed. Two scraps of 2nd and 3rd century coarseware were found. (2)

50 yds to the SW (NY 0811 4652) two Roman spearheads were found to seaward of a mound containing a rough wall of beach cobble-stones. (4)

Lying on the ground surface at the site as shown on the OS map of 1972 are three large sandstone blocks of which two have been worked. They may have come from the tower. The situation is on a turf-covered, consolidated dune to the north-east of a sand and gravel pit now disused. Bellhouse (6a) confirmed that the site as shown on OS 1:10000 map of 1972 is correct. (6)
