(NY 0829 4700) Roman milefortlet 16-measured position only. (1)
There is no ground evidence for the milefortlet. (2)
The severely wind-damaged remains of milefortlet 16, revealed in section in a gravel pit, show it to be in its "measured" position. Only the rear rampart survives. No ditch had been dug but a defining trench, probably marking its outer lip, was identified on the north and east sides of the site, The few sherds found suggest occupation during wall period 1a. (3)
Examination of the damaged remains of the east rampart revealed two post-pits, 0.6m in diameter and 2.7m apart, presumably of a gate tower, and a cambered gravel road, 1.8m ide, presumed to lead through the entrance, evidently on the landward side. (4)
The site of milefortlet 16 was pointed out on the ground by Mr James (5a) at NY 0830 4702, and was verified on site by Bellhouse (5b). It occurs on a consolidated sand dune which has been sectioned by a sand and gravel quarry, now disused. No remains are visible now. (5)
Features could not be identified on any photography available to the Hadrian's Wall NMP project, but reference is given here to 1948 vertical photography of the immediate area. (6)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7)
