Summary : ENGLISH SCHOONER, 1860
More information : Whilst running for the shelter of Bude harbour in a strong NW gale,
the tide half ebb, this vessel droped to leeward of the entrance and
struck upon the sands at the back of the breakwater. Rocket lines
were fired in her direction, but miscarried in the gale, and
eventually contact was made with the shore by a line thrown from the
schooner, and held taut by four local men standing in the breakers,
the crew clambering over the bowsprit and down the rope to safety.
The vessel became a total wreck at 11am the following day. Each of
the four men, namely, Robert Hoyle, chief boatman of Coastguard;
Thomas Bean, seaman; William Peardon, seaman; and John Hoyle,
carpenter, received 1 from the Mercantile Marine Fund.
