The manor of Chesham, afterwards called Chesham Higham, held by Brictric, a man of Queen Edith, was assessed at 8.5 hides in Domesday Book (1086). In 1257 Hugh de Vere, the fourth earl, received a grant of a weekly market on Wednesday and of a fair on the vigil, day and morrow of the Assumption, which grant was conformed by John, the twelfth earl in 1441. 'VCH describes Chesham as a town'. The older part is situated low down in the valley and stretches along Berkhampstead road. The new town established in the (19th extends northwards along the hill on the Berkhampstead road (1)
