Summary : Excavations at Grove Farm have produced evidence for continious occupation from the late Roman period until the establishment of the planned town in 1248. Features include a Roman settlement, an early Saxon inhumation cemetery, settlement and boundary earthwork, mid-late Saxon settlement and residual Bronze Age material. The Saxon cemetery comprised 42 inhumations, many of which contained grave goods which included spearheads, knives, spears and brooches. The grave goods indicate a fifth to seventh century date for the burials. |

Roman and Early Medieval pottery recovered northwest of the church during trial excavations, no associated features recorded. (1)
SU 013543: Excavations immediatly northwest of the church revealed evidence for continuity of occupation from the late Roman period until the establishment of the planned town in 1248. Evidence included an early Saxon settlement and inhumation cemetery and a boundary earthwork. Roman, middle-late Saxon and early Medieval structural and occupational remains. Residual Bronze Age material also identified. (2)
