'BRISTOL BOUND SHIP LOST - A Lloyd's message from Ventnor, Isle of Wight, last night reported at 12.15pm the crew of eight belonging to the steamer BRAEDALE of Newcastle, landed at Brightstone in their own boat and reported that their vessel foundered at about two o'clock in the morning seven to eight miles S.W. of the Needles. All hands were saved. A story of the eight men's struggle against high seas in an open boat was told to a reporter last night by one of the crew of the BREADALE. For over ten hours the eight men, who comprised the ship's complement, battled in a tiny open boat before, exhausted by their efforts, they reached Brightstone, Isle of Wight. When a reporter spoke to the men they were sitting resting in a local inn. Today they will be homeward for Liverpool, their native city.
"The vessel foundered about two o'clock this morning, some eight miles south-west of the Needles," said one of them. "As she filled with water she took on a heavy list, and we found we could only launch one boat, the smallest. However, we all of us, including the skipper. Captain Dennis, managed to get in. There was a storm of wind blowing and a heavy sea running at the time, but we kept on rowing all through the night and this morning until we made port at Brightstone. The boat was well provisioned, and we were all right in that respect. Still, it was a narrow escape, and we are thankful to be safe and sound ashore."
Lloyd's Register gives the BRAEDALE's gross tonnage as 400, net 161, and her owners as J. Gillespie, Newcastle. The vessel was on passage to Bristol from Dieppe with cider apples, and was due to the city docks today. The BRAEDALE was built in 1894.' (3)
