Summary : A town house, now office and meeting rooms, built in 1591 for Sir Peter Warburton and (via a dowry to his daughter) from 1596 the Stanleys of Alderley who owned it until 1866. It was later bought by the Earl of Derby who gave it to the city in 1929. The south-west wing was rebuilt in the early 18th century and the north wing was rebuilt in 1935. Of two-storeys, now U-shaped, the house has an ashlar sandstone plinth on which stands a timber frame with plaster panels, brick, and a slate roof. |
