St Mungo. (3)

Dearham Church contains 3 pre-Norman carved stones: A piece of cross shaft is situated in the west window of the tower, and the wheel-shaped head of this cross is built into the north wall of the vestry. The elaborately carved 'Adam' stone is on a windowsill on the north side of the nave. The finest sculpture is the 10th century wheel-head cross with Scandinavian ring-chain decoration, which stands in the nave. (4)

Full description of the 10th century circle-headed cross, of which this is the most complete Cumbrian example. Apart from the cross there are two other fragments of Anglian stonework in the church. One is part of a cross-shaft cemented to the window-sill at the west end of the nave, the other part of a cross-head built into the wall of the vestry. Both are of 10th-11thcentury date. (7)
